Protect opens seafarers training center in Cebu
CEBU, Philippines – The Protect Marine Deck and Engine Officers of the Philippines, Inc, recently opened its new Seafarers Training Center branch in Cebu located at the second floor of the Colon Development Building.
Protect is the first with Simulator Training Center in Manila, which has enable Filipino seafarers to take their training in the country and receive their certificate of competency under the amended rules and regulations of the International Maritime Organization.
Protect Marine Cebu president Antonio Gascon Jr. expressed his enthusiasm in the expansion of the training center in the Visayas region.
“Cebu is the right place to expand. We will further expand in the next six months; this time in southern part of Cebu,” Gascon said.
During the inauguration, MARINA III legal officer Atty. Jose Cabatingan III and Nancy Gascon led the cutting of ribbon.
“It would greatly help the maritime industry,” Cabatingan told The FREEMAN.
Protect established its simulator in compliance with the international convention on Standard Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers ’95 for Deck and Engineer Officers.
Its simulator equipment was composed of a bridge simulator of the world-renowned supplier, Kongsberg Norcontrol, engine simulator, hydraulic and pneumatic training packages and programmable logic controllers.
“This is our first branch outside Manila. Makakamenos na ng training fee. Saka para ang mga Bisaya dito na sila,” Gascon said.
He also added that 30% of the seafarers population in the world are Filipinos and the Philippines is deemed as the manning capital for seafarers.
On the other hand, MARINA had an all-out support for the training center.
“It takes us with great pride,” Cabatingan said.
Protect aims to upgrade maritime education for seafarers to be globally competitive utilizing state-of-the-art simulator equipment and competent instructors.
Protect has also received a certification from TESDA and MARINA and recognition by the Maritime Training Council for being the best training center that offers assessment for both written and practical exams. (FREEMAN)
